Hindu Pushups
- An AMAZING
Shoulder Workout from Ancient
India
Hindu Pushups, otherwise known as Tiger Pushups or
Dands, are an amazing exercise that originated in
India. The
Great Gama, whom I mentioned briefly in my discussion of Hindu Squats,
was reported to perform 500 dands daily to maintain his legendary
strength and endurance. There is no need for you to do this many, but
even 50 a day can get you in amazing shape in record time.
Much more than
a Shoulder Workout
Like all great animal workouts, Hindu Pushups are much more than a
shoulder workout. They also work your arms, back, chest, and legs. They
will increase your strength and stamina, as well increase the
flexibility of your spine, hips, and shoulders. If this sounds good to
you, then give Hindu Pushups a try.
Here’s How to Perform
a Hindu Pushup (Dand)
To get into the ready position to perform a
Hindu Pushup, start in the “up” position of a
regular pushup with your feet spread wider than shoulder width.
Walk your hands backwards so that your butt is
in the air, your arms and legs are straight, and you are looking back
through your legs. From the side, your body should resemble an inverted
“V”
Start bending your elbows so that your body
comes forward. Your hips will come down towards the floor. Before your
head hits the floor, however, start to arch your spine so that you are
looking towards the ceiling. Straighten your arms.
You should exhale as you are looking at the
ceiling
Keep your arms straight and push your butt back
to the starting position while inhaling.
Tips for
Performing the Hindu Pushup
When performing this exercise, you should imagine
yourself like you are a wave of water, crashing onto the shore. The
entire motion should be fluid, not herky jerky. Make sure you breathe
deeply during the exercise. If someone is standing on the other side of
the room while you are performing the Hindu Pushup, they should be able
to hear you breathe in and out.
